If you work in a shop that produces custom parts, you know how important quality end mills are for precision millwork. High-speed cutting tools need to be able to take a beating if you want to enjoy a long tool life out of them. While some manufacturers will offer high-speed steel milling cutters or even tools with carbide inserts, you really cannot
bebeat tools made with solid carbide. That’s why here at Online Carbide, we only offer solid carbide end mills for sale.
Milling cutters are workhorse tools. They need to be strong and sharp enough to cut through metal smoothly. While high-speed steel tools are designed to hold their temper and maintain their sharpness even after hard use, steel is not the ideal material for end mill production. This is because at high speeds steel is not rigid enough to mill with precision. This can result in tool oscillation and increased
chattedchatter and producingproduce enough movement to drift off path.
These high-speed working conditions are where carbide shines. Carbide, by itself, is not a material that you would think is perfect for tool making. In its natural form, carbide is a dull grey powdered ceramic composed of equal parts tungsten and carbon atoms. This material is naturally twice as stiff and dense as steel. When cemented together with a metal, typically cobalt, the end product shares several properties of both a metal and a ceramic.
Carbide tools can retain a sharp edge for much longer than a metal tool due to the material’s inherent hardness. This makes then ideal for milling as they can be used for longer without needing to be resharpened or replaced. Carbide’s rigidity also means that these end mills can operate at high speeds because they will not oscillate at high speeds. This will produce a much finer finish on your work. Metal’s flexibility can lead to heavy oscillation which can increase chatter and potentially damage your workpiece.
